Jorge Loredo plays the part of Aranha, the last capitalist of the country. Reflecting on Brazil, he says he went into exile in Paraguay but goes to nightclubs and baleras that have a typical Rio de Janeiro feel. According to Sganzerla, this is “a film that asks one question but receives no cultural answer. Sem essa, Aranha reflects the national situation through cinema’s obscene transformation into national cinema, the platonic freedom that was the dream of the poetic ideas of the Greek warriors which simply becomes a dread of what might be around the corner, coups that become impersonal laughter with the conscience of sound, terrible actors, horrible exploitation and Brazilian cinema. For an hour and a half, Sem essa, Aranha simply asks ‘What is Brazil?,’ ‘Who are Brazilians?’.”
